Luckily, the rocket did not hit us, says Mahela

Sri Lanka cricket team that faced a terrorist attack in Pakistan yesterday (03) arrived in the home country today (04) early morning in a special flight arranged by Sri Lanka.

The Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge that went to take them, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama that came from Nepal to Pakistan and the President Mahinda Rajapakse who cut short the Nepal tour arrived in Sri Lanka in the same flight.

On arrival, addressing media Sri Lanka cricket captain Mahela Jayawardhana said, "First, the wheels of our bus were shot. As they shot at the bus, we crawled under the seats. The driver was shot next but the target missed. He drove the bus forward. Later, we came to know that 12 persons surrounded the bus and fired at it. They fired a rocket as well but it did not hit the target."

Mahela thanked Mehar Mohammed Kaleel, the driver of the bus, for rescuing their lives. "We are indebted to his great courage," he said.

The driver said to foreign media, "I was turning the bus towards the playground at the main roundabout. I saw a rocket was missing the bus and hitting a lamp post. One player shouted 'Go straight' as soon as the firing started. I gathered courage and drove the bus as fast as I could towards the playground keeping my head low. A bomb they threw under the bus exploded after we passed it."
